northern lights, fireflies

Aurora, Fireflies, June 23, 2015. We had one of the best aurora displays of the past decade on the night of June 22/23, 2015. All the previous day it was apparent from satellite observations that a major aurora storm was underway, but the local cloudy skies did not look hopeful. Fortunately, about an hour after darkness fell the skies cleared for awhile, and we were able to enjoy the northern lights shimmering not only in the north, but also well overhead, and into some of the southern skies.

Also luckily, this coincided with the peak of our firefly season, and they flashed in the field around me as I photographed the aurora. The greenish-yellow strokes of light in the photograph are fireflies.

The photograph was taken at 12:16 a.m. An image taken a few minutes earlier facing west is available here.

This photograph was featured on the SkyNews website as a Photo of the Week.
